Acetyl L-Carnitine is the ester form of L-Carnitine; a naturally occurring amino acid metabolized from Lysine and Methionine and used extensively by the brain and nervous system. There is a significant amount of research on L-Carnitine's role in cardiac and skeletal muscle function and in its role in fat metabolism/loss. N-Acetyl- L-Carnitine's research has focused mainly on its role in brain and nervous system function with regard to the aging process. The older we get, the more likely we are to suffer from cognitive/memory loss. Many nutrients have been studied for their potential in promoting brain health in older adults. N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine is one of those nutrients. N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine is involved in preventing age-related effects on the brain by protecting neurons from oxidative damage. Research suggests that N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine may have the ability to slow down and, perhaps, reverse many of the signs of brain aging.

N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine benefits mitochondrial efficiency and functions as an antioxidant within the mitochondria, helping neurons maintain optimal energy levels. N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine increases acetylcholine levels in the brain. Acetylcholine is one of the main neurotransmitters needed for memory. Unfortunately, it is the main neurotransmitter deficiency that occurs with age and this is suggestive of one of the reasons for loss of cognitive abilities, as we get older. N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine appears to be absorbed intact and is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier.
