Description
DHA & ARA long chain fatty acids are important for infant development. These fats are known to concentrate in the gray matter of the baby’s brain and eye retina starting in the third trimester of pregnancy. Breast milk continues to provide an abundance of these fatty acids once a baby is born. If breast milk is not available, then a baby requires a dietary source of these fats, either by synthesizing them from precursor fats (linolenic/alpha linoleic fatty acids) as found in Baby’s Only Organic® pediatric formulas; or by supplementing with Baby’s Only® DHA & ARA Fatty Acids which are "preformed" DHA & ARA fatty acids.**
Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA & ARA Fatty Acid is naturally derived from the goodness of Egg Phospholipids using an aqueous (water) process. This differs from C. cohnii oil (algae) & M. aplina oil (fungus) used in infant formulas, which are treated with hexane solvent, acid and bleach.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Should I use Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA & ARA if my
child has egg sensitivies?
A. Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA & ARA supplement is sourced
from egg yolk. Typically egg sensitivities are the result of
protein found in the egg white, not the yolk. Even so, if the child
has a history of acute allergies or egg sensitivities, consult your
healthcare professional first.
Q. Should I add DHA & ARA supplement to Baby’s Only
Organic® formula?
A. Baby’s Only Organic® contains higher quantities of precursor
fats that are synthesized by the human body into DHA and ARA
as needed. However, it is questionable whether during times of
rapid growth and development the body can manufacture an
optimal supply of DHA & ARA to meet the baby’s needs. Medical
studies remain mixed as to the necessity for dietary
supplementation of DHA & ARA during these times.
Many parents are advised to take precautionary measures by
supplementing with DHA & ARA to insure every nutritional
advantage. If you are using a formula with linoleic acid of less
than 1000 mg per 100 k/cal (refer to nutritional label or call
manufacturer), consider switching formulas or supplementing
the formula with Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA & ARA.
Q. How is Baby’s Only Essentials® DHA & ARA different from
the Fatty Acids found in the leading infant formulas?
A. In 2001, US infant formula manufacturers began adding a
novel source of DHA & ARA that is manufactured by Martek
Biosciences Corp. This DHA is derived by two strains of algae; the
ARA is manufactured using a non-toxigenic soil fungus. These
algae and fungus are grown by the manufacturer in stainless
steel tanks, extracted using hexane solvent then bleached and
deodorized for purification.
Baby’s Only Essentials® is the only naturally derived source of
DHA & ARA available for purchase. It is derived from egg
phospholipid (egg yolk) using a gentle aqueous (water) process.
Egg phospholipid also contains Choline, which is an important
nutrient needed for the production of neurotransmitters and
development of the memory center in the brain. Baby’s Only
Essentials® Fatty Acid is a well understood and safe source of
DHA & ARA.
The most common source of DHA comes from fish oil, but fish
sources may contain farm land chemical run-off and various
toxins from ocean pollution including mercury. The FDA warns
that a young child’s consumption of certain fish should be
restricted.
Q. Up to what age will a child benefit from DHA & ARA
supplementation?
A. Author Kathy Arnos (The Complete Teething Guide) explains
that most brain tissue is formed after birth. “An infant has 30
percent the number of brain cells as an adult. The growth
process is so fast in these first few years that by 12 months, brain
development will reach 90 percent and by 18 months, 95
percent of its full potential.” Therefore, children have a strong
developmental need for DHA & ARA through the first 3 years of life.
