CoEnzyme Q10 is found in every cell in your body. It is essential to the health of your cells, tissues and organs. It is a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals in your body and helping to prevent their damaging effects on your skin. Your body produces this vital nutrient, however, as you age, your body's production of CoQ10 begins to decrease. This slowed production begins around age 30.

Lowered levels of CoQ10 tends to result in a lessened ability to produce collagen, elastin and other important skin molecules. CoQ10 depleted skin may also be more susceptible to free radical damage.

Topical applications of CoQ10 may thus boost skin repair and regeneration while aiding in the prevention of free radical damage caused by exposure to environmental elements like sun, pollution and smoking. An added benefit of topical application is CoQ10's relatively small molecular size, making it easily absorbed by the skin.

While many skin care products may make dubious claims, there is valid scientific research to support the effects of CoQ10. One study indicates that CoQ10 has the efficacy to prevent many of the detrimental effects of photoaging (1) -- the skin damage and premature aging that are a result of sun damage to the skin. While another study points to CoQ10's ability to reduce 'crow's feet' around the eyes with long-term application.
