Collagen is a crucial ingredient in the makeup of the cartilage found in joints. Without it, the cartilage would not be able to hold nutrients, and would become brittle and break down. There are about 14 types of collagen found in the joints. Type II collagen is the most abundant collagen found in cartilage; however, levels can decline with age. Type II collagen, also called chicken collagen, contains naturally-occurring crucial joint nutrients including glucosamine and chondroitin, in addition to other nutrients such as fibromodulin, fibronectin, decorin and CMGP, all of which work together to promote healthy joint cartilage. Type II collagen (chicken collagen) is also backed by extensive research. The highest quality chicken collagen comes from the sternums of young chickens, not more than eight weeks old. Flexation uses chicken collagen from this source. Chicken collagen from older chickens is not as high in nutrient content, and should be avoided all together.
